MADISON, Wis. — A group of four Magic: The Gathering players got together to play the popular Commander format. During the game’s setup, the group came up with the totally unique idea to film their games and post the resulting content on YouTube.
“We have a lot of fun playing commander on Friday nights. There’s a lot of back and forth since we’re all fairly verbose. This leads to moments of hilarity that, until last night, were lost to the ether. We pooled our money left over from buying a bunch of anime-style variants and Baldur’s Gate 3 to purchase a camera. We didn’t have a tripod or anything but assumed setting it on top of a folding T.V. tray would work just as well. It didn’t.”
The gang quickly learned there was a lot more to it than a single camera.
“After the usual three games we sat down to watch the seven hours of footage, which turned out to be around three hours since the hard drive filled up. We didn’t get too far into the footage because it only recorded about thirty minutes before it became an out of focus mess, featuring four black-shirted blobs sitting around talking about the smell of their taints. It’s weird how it seemed so funny at the time we were talking about it. Not so much after the fact.”
With reality settling in on their good idea, outside forces put it bed.
“We also realized that the camera couldn’t see any cards we were playing. We tried hanging the camera from the ceiling fan to look down at the tabletop, but it kept swaying when Fat Bobby adjusted his seat. When my mom walked in and asked what we were doing, we told her we were videotaping our card game so other people could watch it. When she asked who would want to watch us play cards none of us had a good answer.”
At time of press the group returned the camera due to Brian’s mother pointing out if he could afford a professional camera, he could afford to start paying rent.
