PORTLAND, Ore. — Everyone’s favorite director is rumored to be collaborating with Wizards of the Coast on a new Secret Lair treatment of the film icon’s favorite planeswalkers.
“When we approached him with the idea he responded with enthusiasm,” WotC spokesperson Shayna Cortes said. “He cited a penchant for the named characters in the MTG universe, a few legendaries, but mainly planeswalkers. He loved their stories which wasn’t surprising, though was somewhat upset that almost all the cards featured them from the waist up.”
WotC was very much prepared to hand over creative control of the project to the famed director.
“We knew he was a fan of the game, the fabled briefcase in Pulp Fiction was actually MTG Arena rare wildcards,” said Cortes. “So, we felt comfortable letting him have total control of the project. We fully expected the result to be textless versions of the director’s favorite planeswalkers. Turns out we were half right.”
In the end, the director created a set of planeswalkers, reimagined to illustrate the creative talent and personal tastes of Tarantino.
“In the end we did get new versions of the planeswalkers, though we were surprised at the art direction taken. Usually, the text on planeswalker cards sits at the bottom half so it’s a little strange at first. Though, we should have known to trust in his vision since a good portion of our male audience were struggling to hide their erections when we unveiled the designs to our test groups.”
WotC did report they denied one of Tarantino’s changes to a planeswalker, stating that ‘Teferi, N-word of Dominaria’ wasn’t “on brand”.
