Reports of a Mono Red Burn deck, which somehow included fifteen Magic: The Gathering Ad Cards, went to the top 8 in a recent tournament.
“We’re not even sure how they were able to register the deck,” redditors commented. “Even though ad cards do come in Magic: The Gathering product they, like foils, are not tournament legal. That alone should have been enough to disqualify them from posting results. Yet, here they are. Plain as day.”
We asked the venue for a statement regarding the ruling that the deck was deemed legal.
“We tried to find a rule where Ad cards were not allowed. We couldn’t find one. Someone pointed out that what makes a Magic card a Magic card is that you open a pack of Magic Cards. Seemed like a pretty irrefutable point to me. Plus, we don’t get a whole lot of people out for Magic anymore so I figured why not let them play.”
The player who is only known a “Bishazz” refused to comment on the results, but many other players at the event gave their comment.
“This isn’t a story. Sure, he won a few rounds because even with fifteen ad cards you only need to cast a spell that deals 3 damage seven times to win. But I think the main thing everyone is forgetting here is that only six people showed up that night. So you’re technically correct that he posted top 8 results but your publication is stupid for even talking about it. What’s it called? Pauper Jumpstart? This is a pioneer tournament. Stay in your lane.”
We assumed this jerk was one of the guys that got beat by the ad-card burn deck and sure enough we were right. We wanted to take our own spin on the deck by practicing it in MTGO, but found that much like all the best commons from CL2, ad cards are not available on the platform.
